Gluten-free cereal stocked in SuperValu
Glendalough native Maria Betts won ‘Best Cereal’ for her Maria Lucia Bakes Cranberry, Coconut and Chia Seed granola at the Irish Quality Food Awards.
The granola is made with jumbo gluten-free oats, packed full of seeds and nuts and infused with a little honey or treacle, natural vanilla and spices. It is then roasted gently in small batches to toast the nuts and seeds and make it crunchy. “Winning such a prestigious award in the highly competitive cereal category against so many well established brands has given our small business a major boost of confidence,” said Maria. “This award will give both retailers and consumers alike the motivation to give our granola a try and I feel it will really help to grow our business.” Betts grew up in Glendalough, Co Wicklow. Her family had a tearooms, guesthouse and antique shop, so Betts began baking with her family at an early age. She has been experimenting with homemade granola, her favourite food, for years. The hobby turned into a career when Betts established Maria Lucia Bakes in November 2013, inspired by wanting to make better breakfast for a gluten-intolerant friend. Now, the Maria Lucia Bakes range of handbaked gluten and wheat free food is available in 25 counties across Ireland, stocked in health stores, specialist food shops and 200 SuperValu locations nationwide. Betts wrote on her website that she is “so happy to make luxury, gluten free food affordable, so that everyone can enjoy, with their friends and family.”
